12 Active Cops Face Administrative Charges
Twelve active police officers will face administrative charges this July 29 in connection with the disappearance of cockfighting enthusiasts, known locally as sabungeros, officials confirmed. The National Police Commission (Napolcom) said the charges include grave misconduct and conduct unbecoming of a police officer.
Edman Pares, director of Napolcom’s Inspection, Monitoring and Investigation Service, revealed in a press briefing that the group consists of three commissioned officers and nine non-commissioned officers. This development marks a significant move in the ongoing investigation involving the missing sabungeros.
Whistleblower’s Revelations Prompt Action
Two weeks prior, whistleblower Julie “Dondon” Patidongan, also called Alias Totoy, lodged a formal complaint against these 12 active cops and six former personnel. Patidongan’s statements, made during an earlier interview, implicated police officers in the abduction and killing of the missing sabungeros.
Local authorities noted that this case has drawn considerable attention due to the involvement of law enforcement in such serious offenses. Meanwhile, Philippine National Police Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III confirmed that 15 police officers, including the 12 active members, remain under restrictive custody as the investigation continues.
Ongoing Search and Investigation Efforts
The Philippine Coast Guard has been conducting search operations in Taal Lake, where the sabungeros were last seen. A recent diving operation aimed to find clues regarding their whereabouts, but the case remains unresolved. Community members and officials alike await further developments as the probe unfolds.
