Tragic Drowning in Barangay Igang, Leyte
A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Barangay Igang, Baybay City, Leyte, on Saturday afternoon, August 23, when a 13-year-old girl drowned in a river despite urgent rescue attempts. The story of the young girl and her younger brother playing near the river highlights the dangers of strong currents in the area.
The 13-year-old victim, known only as “Ana,” was a Grade 7 student who went to play by the river with her 10-year-old brother, “Kaloy.” Their aunt, Angel, was nearby gathering firewood in the forest when the children ventured close to the water, according to officials from the regional police headquarters in Palo, Leyte.
Warnings Ignored Amid Strong River Currents
Angel, aged 27, had cautioned the children against swimming due to the river’s dangerous currents. Shortly after, she heard cries for help and rushed to the riverbank, where she saw Ana and Kaloy struggling in the water.
Despite not knowing how to swim, Angel bravely used a bamboo pole to reach out to the children. Kaloy was able to grab onto the pole and was pulled to safety. Tragically, Ana was swept away by the strong current and disappeared beneath the surface.
Community and Authorities Launch Rescue Operation
Residents quickly called for assistance, prompting a coordinated search and rescue operation involving personnel from the Baybay City Police Station, Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Philippine Coast Guard. The search lasted over two hours as rescuers combed the river in hopes of finding Ana alive.
At 6:45 p.m., rescuers recovered Ana’s body. Medical responders from the Coast Guard attempted to revive her, but she was declared dead at the scene.
Support for Family and Community
Authorities have reached out to the City Social Welfare and Development Office to provide counseling and psychosocial support to Kaloy and the family. Community members expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss and urged vigilance around dangerous waterways.
This incident underscores the urgent need for awareness and safety measures in river areas, especially for children. Local leaders noted that stronger community education and monitoring are essential to prevent similar tragedies.
