136 Learners Hospitalized After Toxic Chemical Exposure

Mass Hospitalization of Learners After Toxic Chemical Incident

In Sibalom municipality, Antique, 136 learners from two local schools were rushed to hospitals after inhaling an alleged toxic chemical on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. The sudden exposure caused dizziness and vomiting, prompting immediate medical attention.

Antique Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) Information Officer Irene Duldoco reported that 107 affected students were admitted to Ramon Maza Sr. District Hospital (RMSDH) in Sibalom, while 29 others were treated at Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital in San Jose de Buenavista. The learners came from Pis-Anan National High School (PNHS) and Pis-Anan Elementary School (PES).

“The learners were rushed to the hospital so they could be given treatment,” Duldoco explained. Authorities are taking urgent steps to manage the situation and identify the chemical responsible.

Authorities Coordinate for Toxicological Assessment

IPHO Chief Dr. Ric Noel Naciongayo has coordinated with the Department of Health-Center for Health Development 6 (DOH-CHD6) to deploy a toxicologist. The expert is expected to analyze the substance that led to the learners’ symptoms.

Meanwhile, Antique Representative Antonio Agapito Legarda visited RMSDH and assured parents that his office, together with the provincial government, would provide financial assistance for the learners’ medical treatments.

Local Officials Respond Swiftly to Chemical Exposure

Governor Paolo Everardo Javier confirmed that doctors and nurses are actively attending to the affected learners. Additional medical personnel from neighboring municipalities have also been called in to assist.

According to PNHS teacher Mark Del Rosario, students began complaining of a strong, unpleasant odor shortly after classes started around 7 a.m. During the first period, several learners began to collapse, prompting teachers to immediately call the Sibalom Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office for help.

Sibalom Mayor Gian Carlo Occeña and other local officials canceled the scheduled inaugural session of the municipal council to respond swiftly at the hospital. Classes at both PNHS and PES were suspended for the day to prioritize the health and safety of students.

Community Impact and Moving Forward

The incident has raised concerns among parents and residents about environmental safety and chemical hazards near schools. Authorities are investigating the source of the toxic chemical to prevent future occurrences.

Local leaders emphasized the importance of quick action and coordinated response in emergencies. “Daghan kaayong salamat sa mga nagtabang ug nag-responde dayon,” a community member said, expressing gratitude for the prompt medical and governmental assistance.
