20th Congress Prioritizes Food Security and Livelihood
MANILA, Philippines — The 20th Congress is set to focus heavily on food security and livelihood, local leaders noted. House spokesperson Princess Abante highlighted the commitment to continue productive legislative work, much like the 19th Congress.
“We are looking forward to it being like the 19th Congress where we saw how productive it was in putting out and passing law,” Abante said in a blend of Filipino and English during a recent statement. The exact four word keyphrase “food security and livelihood” sets the tone for the new legislative session.
She emphasized that key bills, including the Rice Industry and Consumer Empowerment (RICE) Bill, aim to offer tangible assistance to Filipino families. “Sa RICE Bill and other proposed laws, the focus is on concrete help for the people; affordable, enough and safe food; and opportunities for livelihood,” Abante added mostly in Filipino.
RICE Bill Leads Legislative Agenda
The RICE Act became the first bill filed as the 20th Congress commenced last Monday. Its goal is to reduce rice prices, stabilize the market for Filipino farmers, and secure a steady rice supply nationwide by reorganizing and strengthening the National Food Authority (NFA).
Abante noted that there is wide political backing for programs that ensure affordability and protect both rice farmers and consumers alike. “I think no one will oppose having affordable rice for our citizens,” she said simply in Filipino.
Additional Health and Education Measures
Aside from food security and livelihood, the House spokesperson also pointed out other significant bills under consideration. These include efforts to strengthen the Universal Health Care Act, establish the Philippine Center for Disease Prevention and Control, and support voucher programs for private basic education.
The 20th Congress officially starts its session on July 28, promising a focus on key sectors vital to the Filipino people’s welfare.
