Strong Support Builds for Martin Romualdez in 20th Congress
A remarkable total of 285 congressmen have expressed their support for Martin Romualdez as the Speaker of the House heading into the 20th Congress. This strong backing has nearly guaranteed his continuation in the top leadership post.
Deputy Speaker from Quezon’s 2nd district, Representative David “Jay-Jay” Suarez, revealed that 278 of these lawmakers have already signed formal declarations endorsing Romualdez. Interestingly, the latest supporters include members from the Liberal Party (LP), who have traditionally not been part of the administration coalition.
“As of today, 285 House members have expressed support for Speaker Romualdez, with 278 lawmakers having already signed formal declarations—including four out of six members of the LP who are now part of the larger movement for legislative continuity and national stability,” Suarez said.
Cross-Party Unity Strengthens Legislative Leadership
The inclusion of the Liberal Party in this coalition highlights a political shift, as some of its members join forces with Romualdez, the president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD). This alliance reflects a shared commitment to legislative continuity during the latter half of President Marcos’ current term.
Deputy Speaker Suarez emphasized that Romualdez’s leadership has earned broad trust due to his principled and results-driven approach. “What we are witnessing is no longer just support from traditional allies—it’s a political groundswell cutting across the entire spectrum,” he said.
Romualdez has also responded to the President’s call for effective leadership, demonstrated by the House’s swift approval of priority measures aligned with the executive’s legislative agenda.
Supermajority Bloc Extends Across Parties
The pro-Romualdez supermajority includes the Lakas-CMD, Nacionalista Party (NP), National Unity Party (NUP), Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. (PCFI), and now, the Liberal Party.
Many lawmakers see the LP’s decision to support Romualdez as a recognition of the mature and competent leadership needed in these times. It emphasizes prioritizing effective lawmaking and institutional harmony over partisan divides.
Commitment to Stability and Progress Under Romualdez
“Leadership in the House is about bringing people together to pass meaningful laws. Speaker Romualdez has done that, time and again. The unity we now see among House members reflects a collective commitment to stability, progress, and responsible governance under his stewardship,” added Suarez.
This development follows Suarez’s earlier statement declaring the speakership race effectively decided, highlighting Romualdez’s overwhelming support.
“This is already a supermajority. Tapos na (It’s over). The Speaker has the numbers,” he remarked.
