300 Persons Deprived of Liberty Transferred to Sablayan Prison
Last Friday, June 13, three hundred persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City were relocated to the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Occidental Mindoro. This move aligns with the ongoing decongestion program at NBP, which is set to be converted into a government center, local sources said.
The transfer of 300 persons deprived of liberty also aims to strengthen the agricultural initiatives of the prison and penal farms, where the PDLs contribute to livelihood projects and rehabilitation efforts. This approach supports their reformation while providing valuable labor for the facilities.
Coordinated Efforts Ensure Safe Transfer of PDLs
With this recent relocation, a total of 11,227 persons deprived of liberty have been transferred from NBP to other correctional facilities nationwide. The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) confirmed that the operation was carefully coordinated by around 100 correctional officers, including members of the escort unit and the Philippine National Police.
BuCor Director General Gregorio P. Catapang Jr. emphasized that the collaboration among various government agencies plays a crucial role. He noted that such teamwork is essential not only for the safety and security of the persons deprived of liberty but also for maintaining public order throughout the transfer process.
Supporting Rehabilitation Through Productive Work
The transfer helps balance inmate populations and bolsters the agricultural programs integral to the penal farms’ rehabilitation strategy. Engaging persons deprived of liberty in farming and livelihood projects provides them with meaningful activities and skills development, which are vital for their eventual reintegration into society.
Local leaders highlighted that this decongestion effort is part of a broader plan to improve prison management and upgrade facilities to meet modern standards. By shifting inmates to other penal farms, authorities aim to ease overcrowding and enhance living conditions inside the NBP.
