34 Packs of Suspected Shabu Recovered in West Philippine Sea
Vigan City, Ilocos Sur – Fishermen in the West Philippine Sea near Santa Cruz, Ilocos Sur, discovered 34 packs of suspected shabu, police reported Sunday. The incident occurred about 84 kilometers south of Vigan City, the provincial capital. Authorities estimate the contraband’s value at approximately P231 million.
Each pack weighs about one kilogram. Of the recovered packs, 22 remain intact while three were melted. The intact packs bore the label “Freeso-dried Durien” with a picture of a durian fruit and were valued at P149 million. Meanwhile, twelve packs wrapped in black plastic labeled “Refined Chinese Tea” with the Chinese characters “Daguanyin” were also found, valued at P81 million.
Authorities Secure and Document Illegal Drugs
Ilocos Sur police chief Police Colonel Darnell T. Dulnuan, together with barangay officials and Philippine Coast Guard personnel, supervised the inventory, marking, and documentation of the seized drugs. The Provincial Forensic Unit carried out the detailed examination. Local leaders noted the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and fishing communities in detecting such shipments.
Dulnuan instructed police chiefs from coastal municipalities in Ilocos Sur to intensify surveillance efforts. He urged them to coordinate closely with the Maritime Group and Philippine Coast Guard to prevent similar incidents. He also praised the vigilance and cooperation of local fishermen for their role in the recovery.
