Strong 5.7-Magnitude Quake Jolts Davao Oriental
A powerful 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, on Saturday evening, officials confirmed. Experts warned that aftershocks are likely to follow this significant seismic event.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the quake struck at 7:32 p.m. and originated from tectonic movements beneath the earth’s surface.
Epicenter and Depth Details
The earthquake’s epicenter was pinpointed 155 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso. It occurred at a depth of 80 kilometers, which contributed to the range of intensities felt across neighboring provinces.
Instrumental Intensities Recorded Across Regions
Phivolcs recorded varying intensities in several locations. Intensity IV was felt in Alabel, Sarangani, indicating moderate shaking.
Intensity III tremors were experienced in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Malungon, Sarangani; and General Santos City, South Cotabato. These areas reported noticeable shaking but no serious damage.
Meanwhile, Intensity II was observed in Matanao and Magsaysay in Davao del Sur; Quinapondan in Eastern Samar; and Tupi and Koronadal City in South Cotabato.
Less intense tremors, Intensity I, were felt in Maasim and Kiamba in Sarangani; T’Boli, South Cotabato; and the Sultan Kudarat municipalities of Palimbang, President Quirino, and Esperanza.
No Damage Expected, Officials Say
Local authorities noted that the quake’s depth and location suggest no damage to properties is expected. Residents were advised to remain alert for any aftershocks and to follow safety protocols.
