Strong Support from Party-List Representatives for Speaker Romualdez
MANILA, Philippines — A significant majority of party-list representatives in the upcoming 20th Congress have voiced their support for the leadership of House Speaker Martin Romualdez. According to local leaders, 58 out of 63 party-list lawmakers plan to back Romualdez, signaling robust unity within this sector.
Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Alfredo Garbin shared that these 58 lawmakers intend to join the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. (PCFI), which aligns with Romualdez’s leadership. “Sixty-three seats are allocated for party-list representatives, but 58 are supportive of the Speaker and intend to join the Party-list Coalition (PCFI). We are still waiting for the others to submit their application, but during the orientation and get-together, they were present and already signified that they belong to the coalition,” Garbin said during an ambush interview.
Party-List Coalition’s Role in the Supermajority Bloc
The Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. forms a vital part of the supermajority bloc that supports Romualdez in the House. Besides the party-list representatives, several political parties have also declared their backing. These include the Liberal Party, Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, Nacionalista Party, National Unity Party, Nationalist People’s Coalition, and Partido Federal ng Pilipinas.
On June 26, House Assistant Majority Leader and Manila 1st District Rep. Ernesto “Ernix” Dionisio Jr. confirmed that 287 lawmakers had already expressed support for Romualdez’s speakership. Of these, 283 had physically signed a manifesto endorsing his leadership.
Romualdez’s Leadership Praised by Lawmakers
Deputy Speaker and Quezon 2nd District Rep. David “Jayjay” Suarez declared the speakership race effectively over in May, emphasizing Romualdez’s secured majority support. He highlighted the commendations Romualdez received for his previous term, including the timely approval of national budgets, the advancement of key economic reforms, and the smooth partnership between the House and the executive branch.
This widespread support reflects confidence in Romualdez’s ability to lead the 20th Congress effectively and continue the progress established in earlier sessions.
