6th Infantry Division Investigates Rookie Soldier Death
COTABATO CITY — The 6th Infantry Division (ID) is actively investigating the death of Pvt. Charlie G. Patigayon, a 22-year-old new recruit who suddenly collapsed during the traditional reception rites at the 6th Infantry Battalion headquarters in Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur on July 30, 2025.
Patigayon, from Kolambungan, Lanao del Norte, was welcomed alongside other soldiers by senior military officials when he fainted unexpectedly. The incident has prompted the 6th Infantry Division to examine the circumstances surrounding his passing closely.
Immediate Medical Response and Initial Findings
According to military sources, Lt. Colonel Roden Orbon, spokesperson for the 6th ID, said Patigayon was swiftly transported to Camp Siongco Hospital. Sadly, he passed away the following day. Initial medical examinations pointed to kidney failure as the cause of death.
“We are still investigating to determine if there are abuses against the young soldier,” Orbon added, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the inquiry.
Disciplinary Actions and Ongoing Investigation
Orbon also disclosed that some senior Army personnel from the 6th Infantry Battalion have been relieved of their duties amid the probe, although details remain undisclosed. “There are no indications of physical abuse, but the family has coordinated with local police in Cotabato City to obtain an autopsy report to aid the investigation,” he said.
The 6th Infantry Division reaffirmed that reception rites are longstanding traditions to welcome new soldiers. However, these ceremonies must prioritize the health and safety of all personnel.
Zero-Tolerance Policy on Harmful Practices
“These activities must adhere strictly to military policies and regulations,” a division statement read. “Any breach that endangers personnel welfare will face disciplinary measures.” The 6th ID maintains a zero-tolerance stance against any actions that jeopardize soldiers’ lives, according to Orbon.
Plans are underway to assist in transporting Patigayon’s remains back to his hometown in Lanao del Norte. Currently, his body is held at the 6th ID mortuary in Camp Siongco, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte.
