Two Abu Sayyaf Group Members Captured in Metro Manila
Authorities recently apprehended two wanted Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) members who have been hiding in Metro Manila for over twenty years. Court records and ongoing investigations remind us of their involvement in violent crimes that occurred in Basilan more than two decades ago. These arrests came after credible intelligence confirmed their presence in the National Capital Region, triggering two separate police operations.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the first suspect was detained around 10:30 p.m. on May 11 while leaving a construction site in Binondo, Manila. Shortly after, at about 11 p.m. the same evening, the second suspect was arrested while playing basketball near his home in Barangay Bagong Pag-asa, Quezon City.
Details Behind the Arrests
NCRPO officials emphasized that these two individuals had long evaded justice by using false identities and integrating themselves into urban communities. “For over two decades, these identified ASG members hid behind false identities and sought refuge in our communities, but through our program against fugitives, we have proven that no criminal, no terrorist, can escape the long arm of the law,” a police official stated.
The arrests were executed following an arrest warrant issued by a Basilan court related to a kidnapping and serious illegal detention case. This case stems from the 2001 abduction of 15 plantation workers in Lantawan town, Basilan, two of whom were tragically beheaded.
Fake Documents and Attempts to Evade Capture
During the arrest and verification process, both suspects attempted to conceal their identities. One presented a counterfeit National ID, while the other submitted a forged clearance from the National Bureau of Investigation. These deceptive acts only strengthened the credibility of victim-witness testimonies and confirmed the suspects’ determination to avoid accountability.
“These deceptive acts further reinforced the reliability of the sworn identification provided by the victim-witness and confirmed the fugitives’ ongoing efforts to evade justice,” police sources added.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings and Public Safety Efforts
Currently, both suspects remain in police custody as authorities prepare the Return of the Warrant of Arrest and Commitment Orders from the issuing court. The police also highlighted that these successful operations were the result of enhanced intelligence efforts and strong cooperation among various law enforcement units.
“This mission reflects our strengthened intelligence efforts, our solid partnerships with allied units, and our unwavering resolve to safeguard our people from terrorism. Justice may have been delayed, but today, it was delivered,” said the police spokesperson.
These arrests demonstrate the continued commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring that fugitives cannot find safe haven, even in urban areas. Community leaders and local experts commend the police’s resolve to uphold justice and protect citizens from threats.
