Acting Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte Postpones Charity Boxing Match
Acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte recently announced he cannot join Philippine National Police chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III in the planned charity boxing match on Sunday, July 26. Duterte said he has “other things to do” and suggested a later date instead.
“I cannot be there on Sunday. I have other things to do. But Tuesday, I’m available. Tuesday, Wednesday, but not Sunday,” Duterte said in a Facebook video. “Tuesday, Wednesday, or any other day.” The mayor encouraged Torre to use the extra time to practice, giving advice on improving defensive moves.
Duterte Offers Boxing Tips and Questions Charity Motive
“So, I think, it’s better for you because you still have time to practice. Because your punching is a bit… when you jab, you immediately lower your hand. You need to defend your face. When you jab, you immediately return to your face. So, just a little advice, practice,” Duterte said.
He also expressed doubts about Torre’s use of the recent tropical cyclone victims as beneficiaries of the match’s charity. “If you really just want a fight, why do you need charity? Why do you need the, do you need to use what’s happening right now with the floods in Metro Manila?” the acting mayor questioned.
Challenge for a No-Gloves Fight and Drug Test Condition
Beyond the ring, Duterte challenged Torre to a bare-knuckle fistfight without cameras or gloves. “If you want, I’ll come to you, no cameras. Let’s fight, no gloves. Why do you need anything? Are you serious about showbiz?” he said.
He added, “So if you really want it, it’s just the two of you. Either I’ll come to you, just the two of us, just bring your bodyguard with you so that if something happens to you, at least someone will be there to pick you through the hospital.”
Duterte also set a precondition for the fight. He demanded that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and all elected officials submit to a hair follicle drug test before the bout could proceed.
Earlier, Gen. Torre accepted Duterte’s original challenge but insisted the fight be a charity event for the recent flood victims.
