Temporary Terminal Set Up at Masbate Airport
Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez has instructed the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap) to establish a makeshift terminal for passengers. This initiative comes as repair works on the heavily damaged Masbate Airport continue following the recent devastation caused by Typhoon Opong.
Officials reported that the early preparation of the temporary facility aims to ensure uninterrupted passenger services despite ongoing reconstruction efforts. The secretary personally led an inspection of the P10 million repair project to assess the airport’s condition and expedite recovery.
Damage Assessment and Repair Plans
Community members noted that Typhoon Opong left significant damage to Masbate Airport’s infrastructure, affecting both terminal buildings and runway facilities. The Civil Aviation Authority is now coordinating closely with local leaders to fast-track rehabilitation and restore full airport operations.
Lopez emphasized the importance of maintaining passenger convenience and safety during the repair period. “We are committed to providing a functional terminal to serve travelers while the main structure undergoes restoration,” he said.
Ensuring Continuity Amid Challenges
Local leaders highlighted that the makeshift terminal will include essential amenities to accommodate passengers. This temporary setup will help ease travel disruptions and support the local economy dependent on air connectivity.
Authorities are also monitoring weather conditions closely to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of repair crews working on site.
Looking Ahead
Officials reported that the full rehabilitation of Masbate Airport is expected to progress steadily with adequate funding and resources. The acting secretary’s proactive approach demonstrates the government’s commitment to restoring vital transportation links swiftly.
