Empowering the Aetas of Porac This Christmas
To ensure the Aetas of Porac, Pampanga no longer need to travel to cities to beg during the Christmas season, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian took decisive action. They distributed 60 carabaos, 30 garetas (carabao-drawn carts), and various farming tools to strengthen local livelihoods.
This initiative aims to provide sustainable support for the community by enhancing their agricultural capacity. Officials reported that these resources will help the Aetas focus on farming and reduce their reliance on begging in urban areas.
Livelihood Support through Agriculture
Local leaders noted that the distribution of carabaos and garetas is a vital step in promoting self-sufficiency. The farm implements will enable the Aetas to cultivate their lands more effectively, ensuring food security and steady income.
“Dati po ay napupunta kami sa mga lungsod para mamalimos, pero ngayon ay may sapat na po kaming kagamitan para sa aming bukid,” shared a community member. This reflects the positive impact of the program on the indigenous people’s daily lives.
Government Commitment to Indigenous Communities
Sources said the government’s commitment extends beyond this distribution. Continuous support and monitoring are planned to ensure that the Aetas maximize the benefits of these resources.
Secretary Gatchalian emphasized the importance of such programs in uplifting marginalized groups, stating that empowering indigenous communities aligns with national development goals.
Looking Ahead: Sustainable Progress
Community members expressed hope that this initiative will inspire further projects focused on education, health, and infrastructure. They believe these efforts will create lasting change for the Aetas of Porac.
By providing the tools needed for farming, the government helps the Aetas regain dignity and independence, especially during the festive season when vulnerability often increases.
