AFP Expands Fleet with New FA-50PH Fighter Jets
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is set to boost its air power by acquiring 12 more FA-50PH Fighting Eagles. The Department of National Defense (DND) recently signed a $700 million contract with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) for these advanced fighter jets. This acquisition will significantly enhance the Philippine Air Force’s capabilities and readiness.
This move continues the government’s commitment to its modernization program, which began earnestly after the 2012 Scarborough Shoal standoff with China. The purchase of the FA-50PH jets from South Korea is a key part of this effort.
Upgraded FA-50PH Jets to Strengthen Defense
The new FA-50PH fighters will come with important upgrades. According to sources, these will include air-to-air refueling capabilities, advanced radar systems, and improved weapon integration. These improvements will allow the jets to perform a wider range of missions more effectively. Delivery of the 12 jets is expected to be completed by 2030.
The initial batch of FA-50s acquired under the previous administration consisted of 12 jets, but only 11 remain operational after one crashed in Mindanao. The current deal also covers comprehensive logistics and maintenance support to ensure the jets’ durability and performance.
Modernization Program Boosts Regional Security
The DND emphasized that the FA-50PH has proven its versatility and reliability in various missions. Expanding the fleet highlights the Philippines’ determination to modernize its defense forces and contribute to regional stability. Local leaders noted that this upgrade is crucial amid evolving security challenges in the Asia-Pacific region.
This acquisition reflects a broader effort to strengthen the AFP’s air capabilities and deter potential threats. The government continues to prioritize investments that enhance national security and protect the country’s sovereignty.
