AFP Chief Denies Rumors of Military Overthrow Attempt

AFP Chief Dismisses Rumors of Military Overthrow Attempt

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief has firmly rejected rumors suggesting a military overthrow attempt against President Marcos Jr. Speaking on Wednesday, May 28, General Romeo Brawner Jr. made it clear that as long as he leads the military, such an event will not take place. He emphasized the importance of the military’s loyalty to the Constitution and the established chain of command.

“As long as I serve as Chief of Staff, no coup shall happen. Not on my watch. We will not be shaken by rumor, nor outmaneuvered by noise,” Brawner declared, addressing the resurgence of unfounded claims about discord within military ranks.

Background of Military Rumors and Political Climate

Rumors about internal unrest in the military have circulated widely, especially on social media, following the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte and his ongoing trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Earlier this year, during the election preparations, Brawner had already dismissed calls for a military junta, stating that such an approach would not fix the country’s problems.

The speculation intensified after the recent midterm elections, where some senators allied with Duterte won seats while candidates linked to the Marcos administration faced setbacks. These developments fueled online discussions about possible military interference in the government.

AFP Chief Reaffirms Military Loyalty and Discipline

General Brawner reassured Filipinos that the AFP remains a strong, professional, and disciplined institution. He stressed their unwavering respect for civilian authority, the Constitution, and the rule of law. “I have full confidence in the integrity, patriotism, and professionalism of the men and women of the military. Isolated grievances do not define the AFP—our collective commitment to service does,” he added.

He also highlighted ongoing efforts within the military to pursue reform, accountability, and internal discipline, demonstrating their dedication to upholding democratic principles.

Warning Against Disinformation and Calls for Unity

The AFP Chief cautioned those spreading false information and stirring unrest. He warned that such actions could have serious consequences by undermining institutions designed to protect the public.

“To those who persist in creating instability, I offer this not as a rebuke, but as a reminder. Do not sow doubt among the very ranks that safeguard our democracy. Do not attempt to influence or mislead soldiers who serve quietly, honorably, and with steadfast loyalty to our Constitution and our country,” Brawner urged.

He urged citizens to be discerning when discussing sensitive issues related to national security and public institutions. “Let us not be adversaries in the same nation we all claim to love. Let us be better stewards of our words, platforms, and influence, because patriotism is not measured by how loudly we speak, but by how wisely we choose unity over division, and nation-building over disruption,” he concluded.
