AFP Chief Honors Bravery in Surigao del Norte

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. recently recognized 12 Army soldiers for their exceptional courage in battling communist rebels in Surigao del Norte. The AFP chief’s visit highlighted the ongoing military efforts to secure peace in the region.

On June 19, Brawner visited the 901st Infantry Brigade headquarters in Sta. Cruz, Placer, Surigao del Norte. There, he awarded two officers and ten enlisted personnel with Gold Cross Medals, Silver Cross Medals, and Military Merit Medals. These honors acknowledged their bravery during several intense encounters with New People’s Army (NPA) forces in the area.

Defeating Rebel Forces in Surigao del Norte

The military operations led to the neutralization of five NPA guerrillas, including one of Caraga’s most wanted rebel leaders, local sources said. This success marks a significant milestone in weakening the communist insurgency in the region.

During his address to the troops, General Brawner praised their dedication and sacrifices. He encouraged them to remain steadfast in their mission to maintain peace and security in their assigned areas. “Our focused military operations, supported by good governance and the cooperation of our people, have significantly weakened the NPA,” he said.

Shifting Focus to National Defense

Brawner emphasized that with the AFP’s victories against the NPA, the military can now direct more attention toward strengthening the country’s territorial integrity. He explained that the AFP is gradually shifting its focus from internal conflicts to preparing for external security challenges.

“As we near the end of these internal challenges, the AFP is now gradually shifting focus to territorial defense, ensuring we are prepared to protect our nation’s sovereignty amid growing external challenges,” Brawner stated.

Present during the awarding ceremony were Major General Michele Anayron Jr., commander of the 4th Infantry Division, and Brigadier General Arsenio Sadural, commander of the 901st Infantry Brigade, local leaders noted.

Boosting Troop Morale on the Frontline

The AFP chief’s visit also aimed to uplift the morale and welfare of the soldiers at the frontline of the ongoing combat operations against the remaining NPA forces in Caraga region. Their continued efforts contribute significantly to the stability and security of Surigao del Norte and surrounding areas.
