AFP Disaster Response Teams Ready for Typhoon Season
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has declared its readiness to respond swiftly during emergencies as the typhoon season approaches. AFP Chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. has ordered the early deployment of disaster response teams across the country. These teams include quick reaction units, search and rescue squads, and humanitarian assistance groups stationed in high-risk zones nationwide.
AFP officials emphasized that the preparedness of the AFP disaster response teams is a continuous effort, not limited to seasonal threats. “Our unified commands remain active, and the readiness of the AFP is not seasonal. This is a continuing mission to ensure that when a disaster strikes, the soldiers will be there to assist the people,” a military spokesperson shared.
Pre-Deployment and Coordination Efforts
To ensure fast and effective action, troops have been pre-positioned in engineering brigades, civil-military operations battalions, and communication teams within vulnerable areas. The AFP works closely with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), which directs troop deployment when necessary.
“They are the ones who will call the shots for us to deploy, but our troops are already pre-positioned in areas prone to disasters,” the spokesperson noted. Prepositioning includes relief goods, evacuation support, rescue operations, and medical aid. After a calamity, troops assist in clearing roads, removing debris, and restoring communications.
Equipped and Trained for Disaster Response
The AFP has equipped its quick reaction teams with essential tools such as 100 rubber boats, 35 military trucks, ambulances, satellite phones, and portable generators. Furthermore, troops undergo continuous training in disaster response, including rescue operation courses, combat lifesaver training, and water search and rescue drills.
The AFP also regularly participates in multi-agency simulation exercises alongside the NDRRMC and the Office of Civil Defense to ensure smooth coordination with civilian responders during disasters.
Preparing for the Annual Typhoon Threat
The Philippines lies within the Pacific’s “Typhoon Belt,” which sees about 20 typhoons annually due to warm ocean waters fueling tropical cyclones. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) confirms that the typhoon season starts this month.
Given this natural vulnerability, the AFP disaster response teams stand ready to protect and assist communities. Their proactive measures aim to minimize disaster impacts and accelerate recovery efforts.
