Advancing Agusan del Sur Maharlika Highway Rehabilitation
SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has committed to completing the Agusan del Sur Maharlika Highway rehabilitation ahead of the 2026 Palarong Pambansa. This vital 122-kilometer stretch is crucial for the upcoming national games, which the province will host next summer.
Agusan del Sur Maharlika Highway holds great importance as the main route connecting various communities. Local leaders noted that with the DO Plaza Datu Lipus Makapandong Sports Complex in Prosperidad serving as the event’s hub, ensuring smooth transportation is essential. The sports complex has recently seen major upgrades, featuring an Olympic-size rubberized track, a football field, a swimming pool, air-conditioned courts, and a grandstand accommodating 3,000 spectators.
Project Updates and Challenges
“It is doable, as far as my observation is concerned,” said Engr. Ben Alden Serna, head of the DPWH 2nd Engineering District in Agusan del Sur. He emphasized the visible progress in the rehabilitation efforts and expressed hope that favorable weather will continue, especially before the rainy season begins in December.
To maintain steady progress on the Agusan del Sur Maharlika Highway rehabilitation, DPWH plans to temporarily pause road widening activities in sections requiring embankment work. This strategic approach aims to avoid delays and ensure quality results.
Meanwhile, the DPWH Caraga Regional Office in Butuan City, which supervises the project, has not yet released an updated completion percentage. Public concern remains high due to the highway’s previously poor condition and lingering delays in repairs.
Public Concerns and Roadwork Details
Motorists traveling between Trento and Rosario have voiced worries about potholes, cracks, and uneven road surfaces. Such hazards become more dangerous during the rainy season when erosion and further damage increase risks.
The ongoing rehabilitation includes preventive maintenance, asphalt overlaying, major repairs, road and bridge widening, concrete reblocking, and installation of safety features such as pavement markings and signs. Local officials remain optimistic about completing the project on time to facilitate smooth traffic flow during the Palarong Pambansa and for daily commuters afterward.
