Agusan del Sur Poverty Reduction Through Innovative Farming
PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur – Governor Santiago Cane Jr. proudly shared the province’s remarkable strides in poverty reduction during his State-of-the-Province Address (SOPA) on Thursday. The governor highlighted how innovative agricultural practices have been key drivers in this success.
According to a recent report by the Philippine Statistics Authority, Agusan del Sur’s poverty rate fell significantly from 33.4% in 2021 to 23.4% in 2023. This achievement not only surpasses the province’s 2025 target of 27.4% but also signals real improvements in the residents’ quality of life.
Government Initiatives Empower Farmers and Communities
Governor Cane attributed these gains to government-led efforts focusing on agriculture, community development, and infrastructure. “It’s about empowering farmers and strengthening our economy,” he explained. “We’ve made strides, but we can achieve more by working together.”
One significant development is the opening of the Biogeochemistry Research Laboratory on June 24. This facility enables farmers to test their soil, helping them choose the right fertilizers for better crop management and cost reduction.
Soil Test-Based Fertilization Program Boosts Yields
The Soil Test-Based Fertilization (STBF) program, active in towns like Rosario and Loreto, guides farmers to apply fertilizers more efficiently. Cane remarked, “It’s a practical approach that’s showing results,” as it improves productivity while lowering expenses.
Expanding Support Through Agri-Forestry and Infrastructure
The Upland Sustainable Agri-Forestry Development (USAD) Program is currently assisting 6,400 farmers across 150 barangays. Surveys reveal that 73% of participants have seen income increases, enabling many to support their children’s education from elementary through college.
Alongside agricultural initiatives, infrastructure projects are enhancing rural life. These include concreting 14 kilometers of provincial roads and installing Level II water systems in 33 barangays. Additionally, a ₱15 million budget has been allocated for the USAD program in 2025.
Sustainable Agriculture and Wetland Conservation Efforts
The Sustainable Lowland Agriculture Development (SLAD) Program supports 123 farmers’ associations, benefiting over 6,300 farmers. Meanwhile, the Wetland Conservation (WETCON) Program promotes food security with innovations like floating gardens in Talacogon.
Governor Cane also announced the launch of a citronella distillation facility in Barangay Das-agan, valued at ₱229,000. This new facility helps farmers efficiently produce citronella oil, boosting their income.
Commitment to Continued Progress
In closing, Cane reaffirmed his dedication to supporting Agusan del Sur’s farmers and communities. “We will keep investing in agriculture, infrastructure, and innovation to ensure a better future for all,” he said. While progress has been made, the journey toward sustainable development continues.
