Albay Town Orders Pre-emptive Evacuation Amid Floods and Lahar Flow
LEGAZPI CITY — The local government of Guinobatan in Albay province has ordered a pre-emptive evacuation due to flash floods and lahar flow. This early action aims to protect residents from the dangers brought by heavy rains and volcanic hazards.
Mayor Ann Gemma Ongjoco reported that residents of Barangay Masarawag, situated at the foot of Mayon Volcano, were relocated to Guinobatan Community College. This evacuation center provides a safe shelter as the area faces intense rainfall caused by a Low Pressure Area (LPA) combined with the southwest monsoon.
Swift Response to Flash Floods and Volcanic Debris
Clearing teams were immediately dispatched around 3 p.m. to remove debris and volcanic materials deposited by the flash floods. Their prompt action helps prevent further blockage of waterways and reduces risks of additional flooding.
Local leaders emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring and readiness as the weather situation remains unstable.
Relief Efforts and Community Support
Albay 3rd District Representative Joey Salceda confirmed that food packs and mobile kitchens have been prepared to support evacuees at the designated centers. These measures aim to ensure that the displaced residents have access to necessary sustenance and aid during this difficult period.
Governor Urges Precautionary Measures
Governor Noel Rosal advised village officials across the province to stay alert and prepare for possible evacuations in flood-, lahar-, and landslide-prone communities. He stressed the importance of vigilance as conditions could worsen with continuous rainfall.
He also reminded the public to avoid crossing swollen rivers and to refrain from traveling unnecessarily on roads vulnerable to flooding and near riverbanks.
Weather Advisory and Ongoing Monitoring
According to the 6 p.m. advisory from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), moderate to heavy rains are currently affecting Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Northern Samar, Marinduque, and Oriental Mindoro.
Disaster management officials were urged to closely monitor the evolving situation and provide timely updates to communities at risk.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and adhere to local government advisories to ensure their safety amid the ongoing threat of flash floods and lahar flow.
