Oriental Mindoro Halts All Dredging Activities
Authorities in Oriental Mindoro have temporarily suspended all dredging activities in the province following recommendations from the Inter-Agency Committee. This decision comes after more than two years of thorough evaluation of the Balete River Restoration project in Gloria town, local leaders reported.
The provincial government’s move to suspend dredging projects aims to ensure a careful review of environmental and navigational impacts. Officials emphasized the importance of updated assessments before proceeding further.
Governor Issues Suspension Orders to Major Contractors
Governor Humerlito Dolor issued formal letters to Southern Concrete Industries, Inc. (SCII) and Bird’s Nest Resources Corporation (BNRC) notifying them of the temporary halt. The letters specifically suspend the Notice to Proceed (NTP) for their respective dredging operations.
According to community members, the governor’s directive aligns with a request from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for fresh evaluations of the waterways targeted for dredging.
Updated Evaluations Crucial for River Restoration
In his correspondence with BNRC, Gov. Dolor highlighted the significance of revisiting the large-scale dredging plans for the Alag and Longos Rivers. He wrote, “Considering the importance of updated evaluations for the River Restoration through large-scale dredging of Alag and Longos Rivers, I am temporarily suspending the NTP and Operating Permits for these projects.”
He clarified that this suspension does not affect the project’s Environmental Compliance Certificate, ensuring environmental safeguards remain in place.
Concerns Over Environmental and Hydrological Changes
In a separate letter to SCII, the governor acknowledged the DENR’s call for a renewed assessment of the navigational channels in both the Balete River in Gloria and the Sumagui River in Bansud. Officials noted that hydrological and environmental conditions may have shifted since initial evaluations, warranting a fresh study.
Addressing Misinformation and Ensuring Transparency
Governor Dolor also tackled rumors about the resumption of dredging activities this September. He posted the suspension letters on social media to clarify the situation. “The Provincial Government expressly denies the spreading of fake news that there will be dredging today or on September 15, 2025,” he stated.
He further added, “I personally wrote to the proponents in the towns of Gloria and Baco to discuss the issue for further study. We want dialogue and not chaos.” This move reflects the government’s commitment to transparency and community engagement.
Current Status of Dredging Operations
Community members confirmed that after conducting four test dredging operations in Gloria earlier this year, no additional dredging has taken place in Oriental Mindoro. The provincial government continues to monitor the situation closely while awaiting updated assessments.
