Alternative Learning System Center Opens in Agusan del Norte
BUENAVISTA, Agusan del Norte — Education Secretary Sonny Angara officially inaugurated the first Alternative Learning System Community Learning Center in Mindanao on Thursday. This landmark facility aims to expand educational access and resources for learners across the region.
The center is housed in a modern two-storey building with a roof deck, located within the grounds of Central Elementary School in Buenavista. The establishment of this Alternative Learning System center marks a significant milestone in the region’s educational development.
State-of-the-Art Facility Equipped for Learners
Constructed in 2024 with a Department of Education budget of P16.5 million, the center serves as a vital hub for ALS learners and the local community. As of May 28, it features 12 laptops, a 42-inch television, a printer, and a rich collection of ALS learning materials that support diverse educational needs.
Education Secretary Angara conveyed a message of hope from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., emphasizing the administration’s commitment to an inclusive and high-quality education system. “I deliver a message of hope from our President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. He is very sincere in his hope to have an educational system that is inclusive, comprehensive and of very good quality,” Angara stated during the inauguration.
Strong Regional Commitment to Education
Angara also praised the dedication of the Department of Education’s Caraga Region team, led by Regional Director Maria Ines Asuncion. Their efforts ensure that learners across every school in the region receive proper support and resources.
Earlier in the day, Angara visited Datu Saldong Domino Elementary School in Barangay Tagpange, Buenavista, classified as one of the last-mile schools. Alongside officials from the Department of Information and Communications Technology, he oversaw the installation of internet connectivity and electrical infrastructure to enhance the school’s learning environment.
Local leaders, including Agusan del Norte Governor Maria Angelica Rosedell Amante and lone district Representative Dale Corvera, accompanied Angara during these activities, demonstrating strong community support for education initiatives.
The establishment of this Alternative Learning System center represents a vital step toward bridging educational gaps in Mindanao. It provides learners and educators with the tools and environment necessary to foster learning beyond traditional classrooms.
