American Pastor Detained in Pampanga Jail
Authorities have detained an American pastor at the Mexico municipal jail in Pampanga since August 13, following serious abuse allegations. The case involves two counts of physical abuse, with police filing charges based on the prosecutor’s recommendation. This development has drawn significant attention in the community, highlighting concerns about child welfare.
Jeremy Keith Ferguson, director of the New Life Baptist Church of Mexico, Pampanga Inc., faces these accusations. Prosecutor Kimberly Mae S.P. Maat recommended an P80,000 bail for each count in an inquest resolution dated August 14. The resolution also affirmed that Ferguson’s warrantless arrest was lawful and proper, ensuring that due process was observed.
Legal Proceedings and Bail Recommendations
The pastor chose not to undergo a preliminary investigation despite the assistance of the Public Attorney’s Office. As the case awaits raffle by the Regional Trial Court in San Fernando, Pampanga police have requested a hold departure order. This move aims to prevent Ferguson from leaving the country, guaranteeing his appearance during trial, according to statements by Pampanga police director Col. Eugene Marcelo.
Abuse Allegations by Minors and DSWD
The complainants are two 12-year-old boys, represented by their guardians and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Central Luzon. They reported maltreatment that violates Republic Act No. 7610, the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act.
According to the inquest resolution, the boys alleged that the pastor forced them to kneel for extended periods, fed them spoiled food, and deprived them of playtime. These claims have raised alarm among child protection advocates and local officials.
DSWD Rescues 158 Children from Church Facility
The DSWD intervened and rescued a total of 158 children—78 boys and 78 girls—from the church’s private facility. The agency issued a 30-day cease and desist order against the facility amid complaints of physical, verbal, and psychological abuse. Additional concerns included fire hazards, mismanagement of funds, improper case management, and failure to comply with registration, licensing, and accreditation standards.
All rescued children have since been transferred to the DSWD’s Reception and Study Center for Children in Lubao town, where they receive proper care and support, community members reported.
Community Impact and Next Steps
The unfolding case underscores the urgent need for vigilance in protecting vulnerable children. Local leaders and child welfare groups continue to monitor the situation closely. Authorities remain committed to ensuring justice and safeguarding the rights of the affected minors.
