Archdiocese of Jaro Marks 160 Years of History
ILOILO CITY – The Archdiocese of Jaro recently commemorated the 160th anniversary of its establishment by the Vatican. The celebration highlighted the rich legacy and ongoing spiritual journey of this historic diocese. The recognition of the Archdiocese of Jaro by the Vatican remains a pivotal moment in the religious history of the Philippines.
“This is not only a nostalgic recollection of the past memory, but an active reconnection to our dynamic continuing history,” Archbishop Midyphil “Dodong” Billones expressed during his homily on Tuesday, May 27. His words resonated deeply with the faithful, emphasizing the importance of embracing both tradition and progress.
Historical Roots of the Diocese of Jaro
While a Roman Catholic parish existed in Iloilo as early as 1857, it was on May 27, 1865, that the Vatican officially recognized the diocese through a papal bull issued by Pope Pius IX. This decree established the Diocese of Jaro and designated Saint Elizabeth of Hungary as its patron saint.
At its inception, the Diocese of Jaro covered a vast territory that included the islands of Panay, Guimaras, Negros, Romblon, Palawan, and parts of Mindanao such as Cotabato, Zamboanga, Davao, and Sulu. This expansive jurisdiction made it one of the most significant ecclesiastical territories in the country.
Legacy and Growth of the Diocese
Mariano Cuartero was appointed as the first bishop of the Diocese of Jaro, which is recognized as the fifth oldest diocese in the Philippines. This milestone is not just a matter of historical prestige but a celebration of the enduring faith and community that define the archdiocese.
“To remember that we are the fifth oldest (diocese) is not to gloat in heroic antiquity, but rather to celebrate the progeny of faith that makes us who we are,” Archbishop Billones reflected.
The recent celebration also marked the beginning of preparations for the archdiocese’s 75th anniversary, which will take place next June. This upcoming milestone will further highlight the Archdiocese of Jaro’s continued commitment to its spiritual mission and community development.
