MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) recently highlighted the urgent need for enhanced cyber resilience to safeguard national security amid increasing threats. This call comes as digital dangers continue to evolve and affect various sectors.
During the GovX.0 Summit held in Pasay City, AFP Spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla emphasized the importance of a unified “whole-of-nation” approach to cybersecurity. She pointed out that the country faces growing risks from foreign espionage and disinformation campaigns.
Strengthening Cyber Resilience for National Security
Padilla explained, “So there will be always attacks that are driving us in different parts of society.” However, she reassured the public by adding, “But what is important to know is we’re able to detect, and we’re able to deter these attacks.” This statement underscores the AFP’s commitment to countering these evolving cyber threats effectively.
She further elaborated that cybersecurity extends beyond just technological defenses like firewalls. It involves people, policies, advanced technology, and strategic partnerships. “Cybersecurity is not just about firewalls; it’s about the people, the policies that govern it, the technology that will be used, and partnerships that we have,” she said.
Cyber Resilience Against Espionage and Cybercrime
The need for cyber resilience has become critical due to unauthorized foreign intelligence activities targeting military installations, power grids, and essential government facilities. Padilla also mentioned the increase in cybercrime linked to illegal Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGO), further complicating the digital threat landscape.
West Philippine Sea: A Digital and Physical Battlefield
Beyond territorial disputes, the West Philippine Sea has become a hotspot for both physical security concerns and digital confrontations. It has turned into a digital battleground where intelligence operations, disinformation campaigns, and surveillance activities frequently occur.
Despite these challenges, the AFP remains confident in protecting Filipinos in cyberspace. The military is actively collaborating with various government agencies to boost the nation’s cyber resilience. “The Armed Forces of the Philippines is here to work with different agencies as well,” Padilla assured.
Concluding her message, she declared, “We have a battle cry. It’s our seas, our rights, our future.” This spirit captures the AFP’s dedication to defending the country’s sovereignty both online and offline.
