Government Forces Recover NPA Arms Cache in Misamis Occidental
Government forces have successfully recovered an arms cache of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in the remote areas of Misamis Occidental, officials reported on Monday. The discovery highlights ongoing efforts to dismantle armed groups and restore peace in the region.
The Army’s 1st Infantry Division (11ID) confirmed that troops from the 10th Infantry Battalion unearthed the hidden firearms around 1 p.m. last Sunday in Tudela, Misamis Occidental. This operation forms part of the military’s intensified campaign against insurgency in Mindanao.
Details of the Recovered Weapons
The arms cache contained two AK-47 rifles, two CZ rifles, one M16 rifle, and six AK-47 magazines. The 11ID identified the weapons as belonging to remnants of the NPA’s Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee active within the province.
“With this recovery, these weapons will never again be used to harm our communities or support other NPA groups in Mindanao,” the military unit stated. Community members also noted that former NPA rebels who have surrendered provided critical information that led to the discovery.
Context of the Military Operation
The recovery came just one day after a communist rebel was killed in a clash with government troops in Barangay Bandara Ingod, Amai Manabilang, Lanao del Sur. According to local leaders, an M16 rifle was found beside the body of the slain rebel, who was identified as a member of the NPA Platoon Uno, Sub-Regional Committee-5.
Officials underscored that these developments are part of the broader campaign to weaken insurgent forces and promote stability in Mindanao’s conflict-affected areas.
Impact on Local Communities and Peace Efforts
Military sources emphasized that the arms recovery significantly reduces the firepower available to insurgents operating in Misamis Occidental. It also prevents the spread of violence to nearby communities, enhancing security and fostering a safer environment for residents.
Local leaders expressed hope that the surrender of former rebels and the continuous cooperation between communities and government forces will lead to lasting peace in the region.
