Arnie Teves Returns to Philippines to Face Justice
President Marcos has confirmed the return of expelled Negros Oriental representative Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. to the Philippines. This development marks a crucial step in holding him accountable for the murder of Governor Roel Degamo and other alleged offenses. “The former representative, Rep. Arnie Teves, is now back in the Philippines,” the President announced in a video statement on May 29, shortly after his return from the 46th ASEAN Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the confirmation first came from Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão during the summit. President Marcos highlighted that the extradition was only possible through the strong cooperation of Timor-Leste’s top officials. “This would not have happened without the assistance of President [José Ramos] Horta and Prime Minister Gusmão of Timor-Leste. They have been working very hard to bring this to conclusion,” Marcos added.
Legal Proceedings Ahead for Arnie Teves
Teves had been evading authorities abroad since March 2023 following his alleged involvement in the fatal ambush of Governor Degamo. He was eventually apprehended in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, where he remained detained while awaiting deportation.
“As we know, the former congressman Arnie Teves is facing charges of murder and other crimes related to the ambush killing of the former governor Degamo,” Marcos said. He reassured the public that such acts of lawlessness will not escape punishment. “We would like also to assure our citizens that such lawlessness will not go unpunished,” the President emphasized.
President Marcos made it clear that Teves’ return signals the start of judicial accountability, not the end. “It is now time for Arnie Teves to face justice,” he declared.
Background on Teves’ Expulsion and Charges
In August 2023, Teves was expelled from the House of Representatives due to “indecent behavior” and repeated failure to return to work despite orders. Although he has denied any role in the March 4, 2023 shooting that killed Governor Degamo and several others in Pamplona, Negros Oriental, multiple arrested suspects have implicated him in the attack.
Teves’ extradition came after nearly a year of diplomatic and legal efforts. After seeking political asylum in Timor-Leste, the Philippine government filed formal requests for his return through the Department of Justice and the Department of Foreign Affairs. President Marcos personally urged Timor-Leste’s leaders during previous meetings to prioritize justice and strengthen regional cooperation against cross-border crime.
Regional Cooperation in Pursuit of Justice
This case underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing crimes that cross national borders. The strong partnership between the Philippines and Timor-Leste proved critical in ensuring that Teves was brought back to face the charges against him. Community leaders and local experts stress that such cooperation is essential to uphold the rule of law and deliver justice for victims.
President Marcos’ announcement has been met with cautious optimism by citizens who have long awaited accountability in the Degamo case. As proceedings move forward, all eyes remain on the judicial system to ensure a fair and transparent trial.
