Arnolfo Teves Jr. Returns to Custody After Appendix Surgery
Former Negros Oriental Representative Arnolfo Teves Jr. was transferred back to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) late Tuesday evening after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix. This transfer back to BJMP custody marks a significant development in the ongoing legal saga surrounding Teves.
Teves’ legal counsel, Ferdinand Topacio, confirmed that the former lawmaker arrived at BJMP Annex 2 in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, at around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. “He was accompanied by one of our associates, Atty. Raphael Andrada, and numerous BJMP security personnel, as well as members of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force,” Teves shared through a Viber message on Wednesday.
Despite the surgery, Teves is still experiencing moderate stomach pain. Topacio said that he plans to request follow-up medical checkups for Teves at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH). These follow-up examinations are scheduled to take place at BJMP Annex 2 next week.
Medical Emergency Leads to Appendectomy
Teves was initially taken from detention to a nearby public hospital on June 17 after suffering severe abdominal pain. Medical professionals later transferred him to the Philippine General Hospital, where he underwent a laparoscopic appendectomy to remove the inflamed appendix.
Legal Troubles Continue Amid Health Issues
The former representative is currently facing multiple criminal charges. Authorities allege that he masterminded the assassination of former Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo. The attack occurred in broad daylight in March 2023, tragically killing nine others alongside Degamo.
Local leaders and officials remain watchful as Teves resumes detention after his surgery. His health condition and legal proceedings continue to unfold in the public eye, drawing attention from both supporters and critics alike.
