Five Suspects Arrested for Brass Markers Theft
Authorities have apprehended five individuals, including three minors, connected to the theft of two brass markers honoring World War II veterans. The markers, installed at the Liwasan ng mga Bayani public plaza in Alabang, Muntinlupa, served as a tribute to local heroes who fought during the war.
The theft of these brass markers was discovered on May 22 but had actually occurred on May 8, according to police investigations. The plaques bore the names of Muntinlupa veterans who bravely defended the country during World War II.
Details of the Incident and Suspects
The suspects include a 38-year-old man surnamed Rizalia, a 29-year-old man surnamed Cano, and three teenagers aged 17, 16, and 15. Records reveal that Cano has multiple prior cases related to illegal gambling and drug offenses, while Rizalia has previous illegal gambling charges.
Authorities traced the stolen brass markers to a local junk shop where they were reportedly sold. City officials discovered the theft and promptly reported it to the Muntinlupa police sub-station in Alabang.
Community Response and Investigation
Before the suspects’ arrest, the city mayor offered a ₱100,000 reward for information leading to those responsible. He added his hope that those who disrespected the memory of the Muntinlupa heroes would be caught, emphasizing the importance of these markers in honoring veterans remembered every February 4.
Police and Barangay Cooperation
The police worked closely with Barangay Alabang officials, reviewing CCTV footage that helped identify the suspects. An eyewitness reported seeing the group forcibly remove the markers at around 3 a.m. on May 8. Following their identification, the three minors were turned over to the Bahay Pag-asa facility in Barangay Tunasan.
Legal Actions and Next Steps
The Muntinlupa police plan to file robbery charges against the suspects with the city prosecutor’s office. Furthermore, the brass markers appear to have been sold to a smelting facility, prompting the city to also press charges against the junk shop involved. The mayor commented, “Yun nga lang mukang nabenta na din sa tunawan. Pakakasuhan din ang naturang junk shop.”
This case highlights the community’s commitment to preserving the memory of World War II heroes and holding accountable those who would desecrate their legacy.
