ASEAN Encouraged to Support Climate Fund
President Marcos has called on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to actively contribute to the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, highlighting climate change as one of the most pressing challenges today. He emphasized that the “Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage” is crucial for supporting vulnerable nations affected by the impacts of climate change.
During the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit held on May 27, the President reiterated that both ASEAN and GCC regions face significant climate risks. These include sea level rise, increasing temperatures, desertification, and loss of biodiversity.
Philippines Hosts Climate Finance Initiative
As the host of the Loss and Damage Fund, the Philippines is urging regional partners to contribute actively. The President explained that hosting the fund will facilitate easier access to climate finance for developing countries. This funding aims to support the creation and implementation of science-based strategies for climate adaptation, mitigation, and disaster risk management.
These efforts are essential to promote sustainable and inclusive growth across vulnerable communities. Earlier, during the 46th ASEAN Summit plenary, Marcos also called on ASEAN’s partners to increase climate finance to help the region meet its environmental goals.
Freedom of Navigation Ensures Trade Stability
In his remarks at the ASEAN-GCC Summit, Marcos stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in critical maritime routes. He said, “The South China Sea and the Arabian Sea cover vital sea lanes that serve as lifelines to regional and international commerce both in our regions.” Ensuring unimpeded commerce and protecting the marine environment requires adherence to international laws, especially the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Humanitarian Concerns Amid Conflict
The President also voiced grave concern over Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza. He urged all parties to uphold their responsibilities under international law to protect civilians, particularly women and children.
Marcos stated, “The Philippines is gravely concerned over Israel’s ongoing military operations across the Gaza Strip, which have resulted in the continued rise of the death of civilians, including women and children, and further exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation on the ground.” He called for the facilitation of humanitarian aid to those in critical need.
