DOT Secretary Advocates ASEAN Visa System
The Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary recently renewed calls for a unified visa system among the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). She emphasized that establishing a visa similar to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) visa in the Middle East or the Schengen visa in Europe would significantly enhance Southeast Asia’s appeal as a top tourist destination. This initiative aims to promote the ASEAN tagline “A destination for every dream.”
“And the ASEAN visa certainly is part of that dream. To be able to unify ASEAN as a destination in terms of the strength of its natural assets, its unparalleled warmth and hospitality as a people, and as a culture,” the tourism chief said during the SKIFT Asia Forum 2025 held in Bangkok, Thailand. She highlighted that the proposal has been a consistent priority and expressed optimism about renewed interest from other ASEAN members. Furthermore, she noted hope that the topic will gain traction when the Philippines hosts ASEAN in 2026.
Uniting ASEAN through a Common Visa
While some experts remain skeptical about the feasibility of a single visa system due to intense economic competition among member states, the tourism head underscored the importance of regional unity alongside healthy rivalry. She cited the successful “Two Countries, One Destination” program between the Philippines and Thailand as an example of how competition and cooperation can coexist beneficially.
“Competition is always very healthy, but collaboration is healthier in a sense that ASEAN coming together to work as a force for good for the world would really benefit all of our countries,” she explained.
What the Philippines Brings to ASEAN Tourism
Should the ASEAN visa system be institutionalized, the Philippines stands out with its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. The country offers a unique blend of influences that create a diverse and memorable travel experience.
“What we bring to the table in terms of travel and tourism in ASEAN is a story—a story of a proud people that is the result of generations of influence. We are a unique destination in that it’s not one-dimensional,” she said.
Visitors can enjoy beautiful beaches while tasting local delicacies like lechon, a legacy of Spanish influence, or Bam-I, inspired by Chinese cuisine. The local alcoholic drink, Tuba, also reflects the diverse cultures that have shaped the nation. She summed up the experience by saying, “You arrive in the Philippines as a guest, but you leave as family. That is the Filipino way, and that is the Philippine Experience that we are able to offer to anyone coming to the Philippines.”
