Senators Push for Independent Senate President
Senator-elect Panfilo Lacson revealed on Saturday that at least 13 incumbent and incoming senators of the 20th Congress have expressed support for an independent Senate president. Their goal is to ensure a leadership that is transparent, competent, and credible.
“Napag-usapan namin ng ilang mga senador, yung mga incumbent ngayon at tsaka yung mga incoming. Ang aim namin is to have an independent, credible, and transparent 20th Congress of the Republic of the Philippines,” Lacson said following his proclamation as senator.
This discussion highlights the group’s commitment to a Senate president who embodies these qualities. Lacson emphasized, “Kaya kung sino man ang masuportahan, ito lang ang ating pagdidiinan, kailangan independent tayo, kailangan transparent tayo, kailangan competent tayo.”
Consensus Building Among 20th Congress Senators
Lacson mentioned that the talks happened on an individual basis and involved both current and incoming senators. When asked about the number of participants, he said, “I lost track… At least 13.”
However, he kept quiet on who currently leads as the frontrunner for the position, stating only, “Secret.” The final decision will be made when the 20th Congress opens on July 27.
It’s important to note that electing a new Senate president requires at least 13 votes out of the 24-member chamber, making this group a key factor in the decision.
Other Senate Leaders React to Leadership Prospects
Senator-elect Vicente “Tito” Sotto III expressed his willingness to accept the Senate presidency if he gains majority support. Sotto previously served as Senate president from 2018 to 2022.
Meanwhile, Senate President Francis Escudero pointed out that whoever holds the majority must accept the responsibility and challenges that come with leading the Senate.
The push for an independent Senate president reflects a broader desire among senators for transparent and competent leadership that can uphold the integrity of the 20th Congress.
