Aurora Residents Urged to Stay Away Coast Amid Tsunami Threat
Authorities have urged residents in Aurora province’s coastal communities to stay clear of the shore on Wednesday due to a tsunami advisory. This alert followed a powerful offshore earthquake, prompting officials to caution locals about potential dangers.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that an 8.7-magnitude quake struck off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia. Consequently, they warned about the possibility of tsunami waves less than one meter high hitting the Philippine eastern seaboard.
Expected Arrival and Safety Precautions
Experts predicted the first tsunami waves would reach the eastern shores between 1:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. To keep people safe, Aurora Governor Reynante Tolentino issued a formal advisory urging residents to stay vigilant. He specifically called on those living near coastal areas to watch for unusual sea behavior and avoid visiting beaches or shorelines during this time.
“Lumayo po kayo sa baybayin at maging alerto sa anumang kakaibang galaw ng dagat,” local leaders noted, highlighting the importance of caution.
Instructions for Fisherfolk and Boat Owners
Authorities also directed fisherfolk and boat owners to secure their vessels immediately. They were advised to move boats away from harbors, estuaries, and shallow coastal waters to safer locations. Those already at sea were told to remain in deeper waters until officials confirm it is safe to return.
Residents living close to the shore were encouraged to evacuate further inland as a precaution. Such measures aim to prevent casualties and property damage while monitoring the situation closely.
