Former Soldier Arrested for Extorting Air Force Applicants
Authorities arrested a former soldier in Batangas for allegedly extorting money from Philippine Air Force applicants. Officials reported the arrest took place last Wednesday in Barangay Longos, Mataas na Kahoy.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) identified the suspect as “Jona,” a former Air Force member. According to sources, Jona deceived applicants by posing as an active recruiter, promising guaranteed acceptance in exchange for money.
How the Extortion Scheme Unfolded
One applicant claimed that Jona introduced herself as an active Air Force member responsible for recruitment. She allegedly assured the victim a sure inclusion on the applicant list if they paid P32,000.
“She allegedly guaranteed a sure inclusion in the list of applicants in exchange for P32,000. The unsuspecting complainant already sent the said amount to the GCash account of the suspect,” local officials said.
However, the suspect later demanded an additional P89,000 to secure a slot and purchase a uniform. This sudden extra demand raised suspicion, prompting the victim to report the matter to authorities.
Verification and Arrest
Investigators confirmed that Jona was no longer affiliated with the Air Force and had no authority over recruitment activities. Community members noted that her claims were false and deceptive.
Jona was subsequently taken into custody by the CIDG Batangas Provincial Field Unit and the Air Force Air Intelligence and Security Wing. She now faces charges related to estafa under Republic Act 10175, also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act, as well as usurpation of authority and robbery/extortion.
Legal Proceedings and Public Warning
The suspect was formally charged before the National Prosecution Service. Officials urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious recruitment schemes to prevent similar incidents.
