Authorities Recover Two More Sacks from Taal Lake
LAUREL, Batangas — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed the recovery of two more sacks from the bottom of Taal Lake on Friday afternoon. This marks another significant development in the ongoing investigation surrounding the lake.
PCG Southern Tagalog Commander Commodore Geronimo Tuvilla reported that one sack was located 200 meters from the shoreline at a depth of 70 feet. The second sack was found closer, about 100 meters from the shore, submerged 50 feet deep. These discoveries come amid intensified search operations in the area.
Details on the Sacks’ Condition and Contents
When asked about the contents, Tuvilla stated that the bags were not opened to preserve their condition. “The bags were tattered,” he explained. “Visibility underwater was limited to about one meter, so divers had to carefully feel their way around. There was a risk that the objects inside could disintegrate if disturbed.”
To prevent further damage during retrieval, authorities wrapped the sacks in fine mesh nets. “We handled them very carefully to avoid tearing them apart as they were brought to the surface,” Tuvilla added.
Search Efforts Guided by Whistleblower Information
The PCG focused its search within this area based on tips from a whistleblower identified as Julie Patidongan, also known as “Totoy.” She alleged that 34 missing cockfighting enthusiasts, or sabungeros, were burned, tied in sacks, and dumped into Taal Lake.
“This is a vast area to cover, so the witness’s information was crucial in narrowing down the search zone,” Tuvilla noted. “That’s why we started in this approximate spot.”
Previous Findings and Ongoing Investigations
The recent discoveries follow the retrieval of another sack on Thursday, about 10 meters from the shoreline at a shallow depth. Authorities found what the Department of Justice suspects to be burned human bones inside that sack.
After recovery, all sacks were handed over to crime scene investigators for forensic examination to determine their contents and relevance to the missing persons case.
Local authorities remain vigilant as the investigation continues, with the community closely watching for updates.
