Urgent Call for Cooperation After Massive Mambuloc Creek Cleanup
BACOLOD CITY — Mayor Greg Gasataya has urged the public to cooperate following a massive cleanup that removed 26,105 kilograms of waste from Mambuloc Creek on July 10. This haul, equivalent to about three full garbage trucks, highlights the critical need for sustained community involvement in addressing flooding and environmental issues.
The cleanup effort focused on removing household garbage and plastic debris as part of the city’s intensified flood mitigation campaign. Local leaders noted that tackling these challenges requires the combined efforts of residents and officials alike.
Targeted Cleanup in Flood-Prone Areas
The Bacolod City Public Information Office shared that operations concentrated on high-risk zones including Barangays 2, 8, and 10, known to be among the city’s most flood-prone neighborhoods. Mayor Gasataya personally supervised the dredging activities, emphasizing the importance of continuous civic participation for lasting solutions.
While the city implements engineering measures like installing catch nets and reinforcing waterways, the mayor stressed that these efforts will fall short without public discipline and cooperation.
Community Responsibility Key to Flood Prevention
“We can clean this today, but if people keep throwing trash, nothing will change. Cooperation is key,” Gasataya said. He warned that flooding will persist unless residents stop dumping garbage into waterways.
The mayor encouraged everyone to take an active role in preserving the environment, reminding them that clean waterways benefit the entire community. “This is a shared responsibility,” local leaders noted.
The cleanup at Mambuloc Creek serves as a stark reminder of how improper waste disposal worsens flooding and environmental degradation. It also underscores the need for a collective response to protect the city’s waterways and reduce flood risks.
