Bacolod Pushes for One More House Seat
Bacolod City councilor Al Victor Espino is advocating for the creation of one more congressional district in the city. This move aims to divide Bacolod’s single district into two, a change that Espino believes will boost the city’s representation and resources.
On July 10, Espino filed a resolution at the city council requesting Congress to approve the reapportionment. This resolution is a crucial step, as it will support Bacolod City Representative Alfredo Abelardo Benitez in pushing for a law that grants the city an additional seat in the House of Representatives.
Why Bacolod Needs One More House Seat
According to local leaders, having two districts will allow Bacolod to receive a larger share of national government funds. This increase in funding will directly benefit the city’s programs and infrastructure projects, accelerating Bacolod’s development and progress.
Previously, Greg Gasataya, now serving as the city mayor, filed a similar bill during his time in the House of Representatives. Benitez has promised to refile the measure, this time with the full backing of the city government, aiming to see it through to completion.
Population and Status Support the Move
Bacolod has been a highly urbanized city since 1984. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 600,783 residents. This significant population size supports the call for an additional congressional district to better represent and serve the community.
Local officials highlighted that the additional representation will not only strengthen Bacolod’s voice in Congress but also bring more opportunities for growth and improved public services for its people.
