Baguio City Mayor Demands Business Clean Up
BAGUIO CITY — Mayor Benjamin Magalong has issued a firm ultimatum to all business establishments: clean up their shops and surroundings within five days or face closure. This strict directive aims to enforce discipline and maintain the citys cleanliness and safety standards, officials reported.
“They have five days to tidy up their shops, including their frontage and surroundings, or they may face the penalties attached to their violations,” the mayor warned during a recent interview. Local leaders noted that many commercial firms have allowed their premises to fall into disarray, creating health and safety hazards for the public.
Concerns Over Neglected Premises and City Image
Mayor Magalong expressed frustration over the state of business frontages. “Its very frustrating to see these filthy frontages to think that these are businesses. They mirror the image of our city. Owners should be responsible enough to see to the upkeep of their own bread and butter,” he said. Community members echoed concerns that poor maintenance reflects badly on Baguios reputation as a clean and orderly city.
According to the mayor, the root of the problem is a lack of discipline. He hopes for a future where the city government no longer needs to conduct crackdowns or issue reminders to ensure a clean, orderly, and healthy Baguio City.
Inspections and Enforcement to Begin Soon
The Public Order and Safety Division (POSD) alongside other city offices will soon begin inspecting commercial establishments along highways and in the central business district. Their task is to verify compliance with anti-littering ordinances and related laws, sources said.
Businesses failing to meet standards will receive notices of violation and face fines. Ordinance No. 54-1988, as amended by Ordinance No. 59-2020, sets penalties from P1,000 to P5,000 for individuals and P3,000 to P5,000 for establishments. Additionally, non-compliance may result in suspension or revocation of business permits.
Additional Public Cleanliness Measures Enforced
The mayor also reminded residents and visitors that the ordinance prohibits spitting, urinating, defecating, and throwing garbage in public places and waterways. Owners of buildings adjacent to streets must provide trash receptacles on sidewalks for public use, officials emphasized.
This comprehensive effort aims to uphold Baguio Citys standards as a clean, safe, and welcoming destination for both locals and tourists alike.
