Baguio City Mayor Urged to Share Crucial Details
MalacaƱang has called on Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong to directly disclose all his findings concerning anomalous flood-control projects to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. This appeal came after the mayor volunteered to lead the investigation into questionable infrastructure initiatives linked to flooding in various regions.
Instead of appointing a separate lead investigator, Palace officials emphasized that the president has already established a clear mechanism and system for probing these projects. “Our president has already provided the mechanism and system for how this will be investigated. He has also given a directive to the Regional Project Monitoring Committees,” a Palace spokesperson reported.
Mayor Magalongās Offer and Government Response
Mayor Magalong previously alleged that at least 67 congressmen exploited contractors as “fronts” to secure flood-control infrastructure contracts from the government. This claim drew attention as it points to deep-rooted corruption affecting vulnerable communities during the rainy season.
However, government representatives suggested that Mayor Magalongās assistance would be more effective if presented directly to the president, noting that “thereās no need for someone to lead the probe anymore since the president has already provided a mechanism and system for the investigation.” Community members and officials alike noted this approach could streamline efforts and avoid duplication.
President Marcosā Strong Message Against Corruption
President Marcos previously delivered a stern warning to corrupt officials involved in flood-control projects during his State of the Nation Address. He condemned the widespread racketeering, kickbacks, and manipulation of standard operating procedures that have compromised public funds and safety.
In his speech, the president expressed deep frustration: “Let us not pretend anymore. The whole public already knows the racketeering going on involving the projects ā kickbacks, initiative, errata, SOP (standard operating procedures), āfor the boys.'” He added, “Shame on you. (Mahiya naman kayo.) Be ashamed because our fellow Filipinos were swept by floods or were submerged in floodwaters. Be ashamed of our children who will inherit that debt incurred because of what you committed ā because you pocketed the funds.”
Moving Forward with Transparency and Accountability
As the rainy season continues, the spotlight remains on flood-control projects and the need for transparency. Local leaders and officials have urged cooperation with the existing investigation framework set by the president to ensure swift action against corruption.
With the governmentās coordinated approach and Mayor Magalongās willingness to assist, there is hope for uncovering the full extent of irregularities and implementing reforms that protect communities from future flooding disasters.
