Baguio City Considers Speed Limit Implementation
Baguio City officials are considering new measures to improve road safety by implementing speed limits on certain roads. The city government aims to reduce traffic accidents, especially in areas known for frequent crashes. This plan to enforce a speed limit on accident-prone roads comes in response to a rising number of vehicular mishaps.
“I will call a meeting this week. Tinitingnan naming paano i-limit ang speed sa bawat kalsada, especially in areas na malimit nagkakaroon ng aksidente,” a local official said, highlighting their commitment to address this urgent concern.
Rising Accident Rates Prompt Urgent Action
Recent data shows an alarming increase in traffic accidents within the city. Between January 1 and May 27 this year, 375 vehicular accidents were recorded, resulting in eight fatalities and 60 injuries. Among these incidents, nine involved public utility vehicles, while the majority involved private vehicles.
Local traffic authorities attribute 350 of these cases to human error, while the remaining were caused by mechanical failures or poor road conditions. This troubling trend has prompted city leaders to take immediate steps to enhance road safety.
Accident Hotspots and Causes
Several roads, including Marcos Highway and Bokawkan Road, have been identified as high-risk areas. Recently, a truck suffered a mechanical failure while descending Marcos Highway, injuring three passengers. Another incident occurred early Thursday morning when a truck ascending Bokawkan Road experienced mechanical issues and collided with a parked vehicle and others nearby. Tragically, the truck occupants died at the scene, while the other driver was hospitalized.
Collaboration and Driver Education Efforts
In addition to speed regulation, city officials are coordinating with transportation agencies to launch extensive education campaigns for drivers. “Gagamitin namin ang Convention Center for a series of seminars or orientations sa safe driving seminars para ma-address natin ito dahil lumalabas na karamihan are human error, indiscretion ng drivers,” an official explained.
These seminars will focus on promoting safe driving habits to reduce human errors, which are the primary cause of accidents. By combining stricter enforcement with education, the city hopes to foster a safer driving environment.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming meeting with concerned offices will discuss the best ways to implement speed limits and other safety measures. This proactive approach is expected to curb the growing number of accidents and protect both drivers and pedestrians across Baguio City.
