Nearly 3,000 Balikbayan Boxes Returned for Distribution
Almost 3,000 balikbayan boxes, which were mishandled and abandoned by freight forwarders, have been handed over to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) for proper distribution to the families of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). This move follows months of coordination aimed at ensuring these packages finally reach their intended recipients.
These boxes, originally sent by OFWs to their loved ones, were left unclaimed due to negligence and abandonment by unscrupulous freight forwarders, sources familiar with the matter disclosed. The mishandling resulted in delays, causing distress among families eagerly awaiting their contents.
Government Steps In to Resolve Balikbayan Boxes Mishandling
After securing approval from the Department of Finance, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) officially declared the boxes forfeited. They then signed a deed of donation with the DMW to facilitate the lawful turnover of the goods. “The DMW is now tasked with ensuring that these long-delayed packages finally reach the families they were meant for,” officials said.
To ensure smooth delivery, the DMW partnered with a trusted logistics provider. This collaboration aims to guarantee safe and prompt arrival of the balikbayan boxes to their rightful beneficiaries. Government sources emphasized that careful steps were taken, from legal clearances to documentation and logistics management, to release the boxes properly and lawfully.
Efforts Reflect Philippine Government’s Commitment to OFW Families
This initiative aligns with the President’s directive to maintain responsive services that address the needs of Filipino families, especially those with members working abroad. Community leaders noted that recovering and redistributing these abandoned boxes helps restore trust and support for OFWs and their loved ones.
Officials assured the public that every effort is underway to deliver the packages without further delay. “Despite the setbacks caused by the mishandling, the balikbayan boxes will now reach their intended recipients,” local experts confirmed.
