Bam Aquino Targets Senate Education Committee Leadership
Returning Sen. Bam Aquino has openly declared his strong desire to lead the education committee in the Senate. This goal aligns with his firm commitment to reform the country’s education system, a promise he made during his recent campaign where he finished second in the senatorial race.
“I’m really hoping to get that committee so we can fulfill the promises we made during the campaign, and of course, continue the advocacy work we’ve already started,” Aquino said during an interview at the Senate. His statement, delivered in a mix of Filipino and English, underscores his dedication to advancing educational reforms.
Aquino was present at the Senate for the official pictorial of all incoming members of the 20th Congress, which will commence on June 30—the same day he will formally assume office as a senator. He emphasized, “Definitely, the education portfolio is really my target.”
He has even asked the youth and volunteers to pray for his appointment as chair of the education panel so he can implement the promised changes in the education sector. Currently, the committee on basic education is chaired by Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, while Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano leads the committee on higher, technical, and vocational education.
Education Reform Remains Aquino’s Priority
During the campaign, Aquino focused on free college education, guaranteed employment, and broad education reforms. “You know, when we run, we run on free college education, guaranteed jobs, and education reforms. And as far as I know, from going around and talking to people, that’s really what they’re looking for from me. So, we’re going to focus on the reforms and the work,” he added, mostly in Filipino.
His commitment reflects the urgent need for improvements in the Philippine education system, aiming to create opportunities and ensure quality education for all. Aquino’s leadership in the education committee could be key to realizing these reforms.
