Bankers Urge Stronger Collaboration for Cybersecurity
The banking sector is calling for stronger collaboration between the government and banks to enhance cybersecurity. Industry leaders are optimistic that President Marcos’ digital push is in capable hands, highlighting the importance of united efforts to protect the country’s digital future.
The Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) praised the leadership of Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda. They recognized his expertise and expressed confidence in his ability to drive the nation’s digital transformation forward.
Confidence in Secretary Aguda’s Leadership
According to local leaders, Secretary Aguda has gained high praise from President Marcos, who trusts Aguda to accelerate technological innovation in the Philippines. The President shared on social media, “Sa pamununo ni Secretary Aguda, tiwala akong mas mapabibilis ang digital transformation ng bansa. Hangad nating makinabang ang bawat Pilipino sa mga oportunidad ng makabagong teknolohiya.”
Urgent Need to Tackle Cybersecurity Risks
The banking industry voiced deep concern over cybersecurity threats, stressing that collaboration with government agencies like the DICT, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, and the National Privacy Commission is critical. They emphasized that public policies will significantly shape the future of Philippine banks.
The BAP outlined key initiatives requiring joint efforts: issuing public advisories, building a national scam database to track cybercriminals, launching consumer education campaigns, establishing real-time coordination between the private and public sectors, and standardizing scam typologies.
Secretary Aguda’s Strong Banking Background
Appointed in March 2025, Secretary Aguda brings extensive experience from the banking industry, having served as President and CEO of Union Digital Bank. He also held board positions in various financial and health institutions, providing him a broad understanding of the sector’s challenges and opportunities.
However, his appointment awaits confirmation, as the Commission on Appointment did not discuss it due to time constraints before adjourning.
