BARMM Lawmaker Seeks One-Time Benefit for Officials
COTABATO CITY – A member of parliament in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has proposed a bill to grant a one-time financial benefit to village officials and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) leaders. This measure aims to support the families of these officials if they die or suffer permanent disability while fulfilling their duties.
MP Naguib Sinarimbo recently filed Parliament Bill No. 379, which seeks to provide death and permanent disability benefits ranging between P500,000 and P1,000,000. The exact amount will depend on the official’s position and will be determined by the Ministry of Finance and Budget Management (MFBM). This proposed law would improve the current death benefit of P20,000 under existing rules.
Who Will Benefit?
The bill specifically covers village chiefs, barangay council members, barangay secretaries, barangay treasurers, SK chairpersons, and Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representatives to barangay councils. It has gathered support from 28 other MPs as co-authors, signaling broad backing for this initiative.
According to local leaders, this proposed financial assistance recognizes the risks and sacrifices made by grassroots officials who serve their communities daily. “This is a step towards honoring their commitment and providing security to their families,” a source noted.
Timeline and Expectations
MP Sinarimbo expressed hope that the bill will be enacted before the first parliamentary elections in BARMM, scheduled for October 13 this year. “We want to ensure that these officials and their families feel valued and protected,” he said.
This proposal highlights the growing awareness of the vital role played by village officials and youth leaders in BARMM’s governance and development.
