BARMM Leaders Call for Unity Ahead of Parliamentary Elections
Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua has called on all stakeholders in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to set aside their differences following the recent midterm elections. He emphasized the need for cooperation to ensure a smooth and peaceful parliamentary election this coming October.
Macacua stressed the importance of collaboration among all parties and the national government agencies to prevent any confusion or violence similar to what occurred during the midterm polls. According to sources familiar with the matter, this marks the region’s preparation for its first-ever parliamentary elections, where a new chief minister and members of parliament will be chosen.
Ensuring a Peaceful Electoral Process
The Chief Minister addressed growing public concerns about election-related tensions by reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order throughout the electoral process. He said that the smooth transfer of leadership and the integrity of the elections are his top priorities.
“In this coming October electoral execise, we urge all stakeholders of the region to unite and work with the agencies of the national government in ensuring that the confusion and hostilities which unfolded during the midterm poll campaign period and on Election Day will not happen again,” Macacua stated.
BARMM remains dedicated to strengthening democratic governance while preserving its autonomy, community leaders said. This commitment is vital as the region prepares for a significant political transition.
Addressing Rido and Clan Conflicts
Meanwhile, religious leaders within BARMM are intensifying initiatives to tackle the persistent issue of rido, or clan feuds. These disputes, often rooted in land conflicts, political rivalries, and long-standing family grudges, continue to threaten local stability and the safety of civilians.
Reports indicate that rido remains a major source of violence and displacement in the region. The United Nations Development Programme has identified these clan conflicts as a significant obstacle to peace in BARMM.
Advancing the Peace Process Through Decommissioning
Chief Minister Macacua also shared updates on the decommissioning efforts of former Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF) combatants, a crucial aspect of the ongoing peace process. He acknowledged his own participation in this process.
“The Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces are now in the process of decommissioning, and I am also part of that process. Kailangan ma-decommission. So, until now, hindi pa rin ako nade-decommission. But definitely, I will undertake this decommissioning,” Macacua explained.
Recommendations for Future Elections
Local experts from the Institute for Autonomy and Governance and the Integrated Electoral Monitoring Committee have observed recent elections and plan to recommend policies that will ensure future polls are more credible, secure, and peaceful.
Their insights aim to help BARMM build a stronger democratic foundation as it moves forward with its parliamentary elections and governance reforms.
