Bataan Province Declared State of Calamity
The province of Bataan has been declared under a state of calamity due to severe flooding. This flooding was caused by the southwest monsoon (habagat) rains and the impact of tropical storms Dante and Emong. Local leaders confirmed that this declaration will allow the government to access emergency funds to address urgent needs.
Governor Joet Garcia announced early Thursday that the Sangguniang Panlalawigan approved a resolution placing Bataan under a state of calamity. This measure is crucial for mobilizing resources to repair damaged homes and provide relief for affected families.
Flooding Impacts Thousands of Families
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported that the floods have affected 44,740 families, which totals 167,078 individuals. Among them, 1,731 families or 5,923 people remain in evacuation centers throughout the province.
The hardest-hit towns include Hermosa, Abucay, Dinalupihan, Samal, Orani, and the provincial capital, Balanga City. These areas experienced extensive flooding, forcing many residents to seek temporary shelter.
Government Response and Recovery Efforts
By declaring a state of calamity, local authorities can now quickly allocate emergency funds to assist in recovery efforts. This includes repairing homes damaged by floodwaters and providing essential supplies to displaced families.
Community leaders are coordinating with provincial offices to ensure aid reaches the most affected areas promptly. Residents are urged to stay vigilant as weather conditions continue to evolve.
