Batangas Jail Escapees Recaptured Within 24 Hours
Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto expressed relief and gratitude after the quick re-arrest of 10 inmates who escaped from the Batangas Provincial Jail in Ibaan town. The governor praised the police for their swift action that led to the capture of the escapees within just 24 hours of the jailbreak.
Local authorities confirmed that the governor is committed to tightening security measures in the provincial jail following this incident. “Governor Vilma Santos-Recto expressed her gratitude to the police for their swift response, as the escaped PDLs were apprehended within just 24 hours of the incident,” local officials said.
Investigation and Security Upgrades Underway
Authorities revealed that the provincial government will continue investigating the jailbreak to identify possible weaknesses in the prison system. The goal is to find out who might be held accountable and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Sources noted that on June 24, a large number of male prisoners—around 762—were transferred to the provincial jail from the original facility in Batangas City, which now houses only female inmates. This transfer may have affected the jail’s operations and security.
Details of the Escape Incident
On Monday morning, the jailbreak occurred while an unidentified prison guard was escorting inmates to a public utility room. One prisoner reportedly threatened the guard with an ice pick and took his service firearm, enabling other inmates to flee on foot.
Police quickly responded and launched a hot pursuit operation. Three escapees were caught within an hour in Barangay Quilo, Ibaan town. Five others were apprehended aboard a bus near the boundary between Tanauan and Santo Tomas cities around early afternoon.
Later that day, another escapee was captured in Barangay Salaban I, Ibaan, at approximately 7:30 p.m. The final inmate was arrested the following morning in Barangay Santa Maria, Bauan town, according to reports from local police authorities.
Commitment to Public Safety
Governor Santos-Recto reiterated her commitment to enhancing the safety and security of the Batangas Provincial Jail. She emphasized the importance of preventing any future breaches and ensuring that protocols are strictly followed.
“We will strengthen all security measures and hold those responsible accountable,” local officials quoted the governor as saying. The provincial government remains vigilant to maintain order and protect the community.
