Nine Inmates Recaptured After Batangas Jail Escape
Authorities have successfully recaptured nine of the 10 inmates who escaped from the Batangas Provincial Jail in a daring breakout. The police confirmed that only one fugitive remains at large as of Tuesday.
The inmates escaped at around 10 a.m. on Monday after one prisoner threatened a guard with an ice pick and seized his firearm, sparking a swift manhunt across Ibaan town and nearby areas. This bold jailbreak has raised concerns and prompted immediate action from local officials.
Rapid Police Response Leads to Multiple Arrests
Shortly after the escape, three prisoners were apprehended in Barangay Quilo, Ibaan, just 30 minutes later. Police then arrested five more fugitives aboard a bus traveling on the expressway in Santo Tomas City by early afternoon.
Later that evening, at about 7:30 p.m., police acting on a tip from a concerned citizen captured Loreto Linatoc Jr. in Barangay Salaban I, Ibaan. Despite this success, authorities continue their hot pursuit for the final escapee, identified as Gerald Herrera.
Ongoing Search for Last Fugitive
Police units remain actively engaged in efforts to track down the last inmate still on the run. Local leaders emphasize the urgency to bring all escapees back to justice to restore public safety and confidence.
Provincial Government Orders Investigation
In response to the incident, Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto has called for a thorough and full-scale investigation into the circumstances that allowed the escape. The probe aims to identify security gaps and prevent future incidents.
Sources said the authorities are determined to improve jail security and ensure this kind of escape will not happen again. Community cooperation has been vital in the ongoing manhunt.
