At Least 10 Inmates Escape Batangas Provincial Jail
At least 10 inmates escaped from the Batangas Provincial Jail in Ibaan town on the morning of July 28, 2025, local officials confirmed. The Batangas Provincial Jail inmates escape has triggered a swift response from authorities.
According to a report from Police Region 4A, the incident occurred while an unidentified prison guard was escorting inmates to a public utility area. One prisoner suddenly brandished an ice pick, threatening the guard and seizing his service firearm.
Seizing the opportunity, several other inmates fled on foot from the jail located in Barangay Malainin, running toward Barangay Quilo. Authorities immediately launched a hot pursuit operation to recapture the escapees, although details remain limited.
Authorities Launch Full Investigation into Escape
Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto ordered a thorough investigation after learning of the Batangas Provincial Jail inmates escape. The governor directed officials to conduct a full-scale probe to understand how the security breach occurred.
The Batangas Public Information Officer (PIO) noted that just a month prior, on June 24, 792 male Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) were transferred to this new facility from the older jail in Batangas City. This transfer happened despite incomplete security protocols at the new site.
While the PIO did not provide further details, the situation raises concerns about the jail’s readiness and safety measures.
Partial Surrenders Reported Amid Manhunt
Law enforcement officials also reported that five of the escapees have voluntarily surrendered to police. Lt. Col. Chitadel Gaoiran, the public information officer for Police Region 4A, confirmed their return but did not elaborate on their conditions.
Meanwhile, the manhunt continues for those still at large, with authorities intensifying efforts to bring all fugitives back into custody.
